Best Movies of 2009

Well the end of the year is upon us and I have been doing some reflecting on the movies from this past year. And wow it was a really, really shitty year for film. I found it very hard looking back on this year remembering some of the worst movies I have ever seen. And most, I’d never want to see again. But even with a year of shit there were some great movies spread throughout. Here are my personal picks for the best 2009 had to offer. These are films that surprised, thrilled, lived up to the hype or were just damn good for me.

1. Star Trek

This was not only amazing it was epic. I hadn’t seen a movie in the theaters this many times since I was in high school. This was great. From the first frame to the last, I love every second of this movie.

2. (500) Days of Summer

The huge surprised hit for me this past year. I went in not really caring either way and walked out in love. I found it to be the best script with the most interesting characters I have seen in a while. There wasn’t a movie I laughed at hard than this.

3. Up

Yet another great film by the wonderful people at Pixar. Fifteen minutes into the movie I had learned to love, laugh, cried, had my heart broken and was given hope. No other film managed to do that this year better than Up. Brilliant. I can say no more.

4. Zombieland

With the massive over saturation of zombies’ films this one stands out as the best, being it took me to a funny realistic world where zombies have won and we as humans just have to “deal” with it. I feel it showed a real look at how we would handle the situation and made me laugh my ass off in the process.

5. Up In the Air

Amazing performances surround by a very real story. I think it shows how we as a society are beginning to lose touch with ourselves. With us no longer being able to connect one on one with each other without the use of technology. All this is being placed in a very real world of unemployment and government recession.

6. Coraline

This beautifully animated world was brought to life by a young girls imagination and it frankly blew my mind. Was so wonderful and creative to see another director manage to out “Burton” Tim Burton himself. Made you feel good, scared and creative. You waned to be apart of this wonderful world.

7. The Proposal

In a world of hundreds of romantic comedies this one stand out as the best of the year. Laugh out loud funny with great characters. Yes, it’s predictable and we’ve seen the story a thousand times. But it’s nice to see it presented in a good way with actors you love to see together.

8. District 9

The Sci-Fi shocker of the year. Everyone who saw the poster did the same thing. Scratched their head and thought what the hell is this thing? Then we saw it, and had our minds blow. Fantastic! Watching a real world deal with aliens and how we as humans would act. It’s a great film, but also sad and hard to watch. I’d like to think we would be better than the humans in the film, but after many years of life… I doubt it.

9. G.I. Joe

This is on this list for the only fact that I had more fun watching this than any other film because it was utter shit. I knew it was shit. It knew it was shit. You knew it was shit. And in the end it became the best shit. Over the top action, bad acting and horrible cliché’ plots and stories. But put them all together and you have a shit fest worth enjoying with friends and alcohol.

10. Avatar

I went in hating this. I hated the hype. I don’t like people telling me how to think about movies. So I went in with a HUGE chip on my shoulder. About half way the chip started to fall off and then towards the end it was gone completely and I ended up having a damn good movie experience. This is almost as good as you’re hearing. Not the greatest movie of all time. It didn’t recreate cinema as we know it. It’s just a damn good sci-fi movie. And sometimes that’s all you need.

Honorable Mentions

Paranormal Activity- Scared the shit outta me to the point where I still have trouble sleeping.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince- Just another great addition to the Potter series of films.

Pirate Radio- Great cast. Awesome Music. Fun and filled with laughter.

The Princess and the Frog- A wonderful film bring Disney back to what made it so great to begin with.

Nine-Wonderfully shot with awesome acting surround by a world of cool music.

Sherlock Holmes- Action packed, funny and great acted. Just a wonderful time at the movies.

Worst movies of 2009

X-Men Origins: Wolverine- Worse than Daredevil but not as good as X3….and that’s not saying a lot at all!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen- The bar was lowered going in, this movie managed to push the bar even lower than I though possible.

Terminator Salvation- A personal disappointment more than most. No plot, no story and we finally saw Christian Bale for what he is. Not as good as you really think.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs- I wish I could go back in time when I was buying these tickets and punch myself in the dick.

White Out- Just so “student-film-making”. Good actors needing to make their house payments.

The Princess and the Frog

In Disney return to the 2D hand-drawn animation this new modern take on the classic fairy tale of the Frog Prince. The film features the beautiful Tiana. A down on her luck waitress who wants to be out on her own and open her own restaurant. Though the course of some unfortunate events the visiting Prince Naveen is transformed in a frog by the evil scheming voodoo magician Dr. Facilier. And with a case of mistaken identity Tiana is also transformed into a frog. Which leads them both on an adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana. Joined by singing fireflies, a jazz playing alligator and an old voodoo witch all are bought together the frogs back to their human forms.

This film is bursting with life and color. It’s set in the jazz-soaked New Orleans during the 1920’s. And doing what Disney does best dressing the whole movie up a great art style that is very influenced by the art of the time period. It is great to some old school Disney once again. And this is them at their best. Some reviews I have read compare this to being as good as “The Lion King”. I disagree with that statement. This has nothing more to compare to “The Lion King”. If anything it should be compared to the magic and beautifulness of “Beauty and the Beast”. It’s got that old Disney feel about it. Good characters, funny sidekicks, wonderful songs and an evil villain. That’s what made Disney great. A simple story worked around the themes that put them on the map.

The music in this isn’t going to be as memorable as “The Little Mermaid” or “Aladdin” but it is good. The beauty of it is all done in Jazz. Which sets it apart from other Disney films of the past. The songs feel good and the work for what’s going on in the story, but over all I don’t think they’ll be remembered as well as say “Under the Sea” and what not. The best song would have to be Dr. Facilier evil voodoo song. But I think that has to be more in part due to the awesome scary images and Keith David evil kickass voice.

I was going to talk about Tiana being the first African American princess and such. But after viewing the movie there’s no need. The girl just happens to be black. The film has nothing to do with that as a plot point. She just a normal girl, nothing more nothing less. It’s great to see little black girls running around Disneyland dressed up as Tiana. I think it’s wonderful to see into their eyes and finally be able to see themselves as the princesses they wanted to be. But for the movie it doesn’t play a part. Disney’s films are color blind and frankly so should we be.

I feel this had everything I needed and wanted from a great Disney Fairytale movie. It’s want made me want to be an artist. Seeing such a great story done in such a wonderful animated way is about the best thing ever. I laughed and even teared up at certain parts. It has all the heart and joy that you would expect from a Disney movie. I look forward to more in the future.
